What is good architecture?

“The idea that composition, detail, light incidence, etcetera, raise the quality of an edifice to the level of good architecture is not sufficient. Architectural quality allows the edifice to be more than the container for what is inside, the wall more than a division, and the material more than the absorption of forces. This added value lies in the capacity to let all the senses roam. Good architecture leads to a change in perception, and vice versa. Good architecture must therefore be built. Only the genuine experience of space, material, light and sound, and the experience of building, is powerful enough to influence perception.”

About Lilith Ronner van Hooijdonk

The office was founded in 2010 in Rotterdam. We design narrative architecture that tells the story of the assignment at hand. A story with different layers: that of the context, a response to building tradition, the wishes of our client, sustainable applications and technical opportunities. The architecture surprises with imagination. Our work reaches from transformations to public spaces like a Performative Space in Eindhoven, and from building a multi-family house in Amsterdam to researching our practice and writing stories about it.
